The four wākus
Before sleeping tonight (tho I rarely sleep, to be honest) I chanced upon a video of Justin Lim (@cjustinlim) on TikTok discussing the Japanese concept of describing work: raisuwāku (rice work) and raifuwāku (life work). Rice work is the work that you do to put rice/food on the table while life work is the work that you do to give yourself life. Lucky are those people their job can fulfill both — life work and rice work.
Some job seekers, they are looking for a job to break the chain of poverty in their families (just like me). This is how hanapbuhay (job/work) is really defined.
The other two Japanese categories in describing work in Japan are raikuwāku (like work) “like" as in enjoy and raitowāku (light work) “light" as in illuminate. (These two weren’t mentioned in the video, thanks published an article by Don Osborn on LinkedIn Four categories of "work" in Japanese & "ikigai“, he also explained how these four wākus fit with a Japanese concept of Ikigai in the Venn diagram illustration)
Most of us may not be on the career path we wanted, not earning enough for our family, and might be living paycheck to paycheck. Some might feel stuck in the jobs they have. May we find our own version of like work, light work, rice work, and life work. Continue fighting!
(Oops this is ain’t my resignation speech tho. Just me at midnights.)
